Welcome to the North Georgia Mountains and the adventures that await. In the tours we offer below, you will experience the wilderness with it's far reaching mountain views alongside forest trail roads in our Overland vehicles. Join us for scenic splendor around every corner and the waterfalls that await.
Our tour begins on Richard Russell Scenic Highway where we will reach an elevation up to 3140' with some of the most scenic vistas that North Georgia has to offer.
We then continue our journey within the Chattahoochee National Forest for several miles on some very scenic trails even making 2 water crossings before reaching Helton Creek Falls.
The falls are comprised of two sections. The lower part of the falls is 35', with a beautiful smooth rock face leading into a large pool. The falls are comprised of two sections. The lower part of the falls is 35', with a beautiful smooth rock face leading into a large pool.
The upper falls are a 60' tall, tumbling cascade into a wide open break surrounded by forest. There is a viewing platform but for the more adventurous, this is a wonderful opportunity to wade or swim the falls!
Departing the falls we will continue towards the top of Blood Mountain to the historic Neel Gap location of the Appalachian Trail. The stone buildings you will see were completed in 1937, the same year as the Appalachian Trail. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a dining/dance hall and inn.
This stone building is now an AT shop while the ground floor of the original inn is run as a historic hiker hostel. The shop is known as Mountain Crossings and has a little bit of everything for almost everyone as well as snacks, drinks, and restrooms. It is primarily an outfitter for Appalachian Trail hikers.
The terrace has some wonderful views. The trail literally goes directly through the building and each year thousands of hikers go through it on their way north to Maine. For those finishing the hike heading south to Springer Mountain , the custom of their old worn hiking boots thrown in the tall trees can be observed.
To reach the second waterfall of the journey, we will be driving on some very scenic back roads until reaching Dick's Creek Falls. This multi sectional waterfall is a bit tamer that our previous one but offers an incredible reward.
Below the last section of the Falls, a wonderful sandy beach that leads to a very large swimming hole awaits. A perfect place for a little swim or just a well deserved soaking in crystal clear waters.
During our drive back to Helen, we will be heading through some spectacular farm lands with unforgettable views from the base of Mount Yonah. Yonah, which is Cherokee for the word bear, is a mountain ridge located in the Chattahoochee - Oconee National Forest between Cleveland and Helen.
Mt. Yonah stands at an elevation of 3,166 ft and we will be passing by the trailhead where hikers start the 2.3 mile trail leading to the summit. It is definately one of the more difficult hikes in the area but well worth the effort.
As we continue our return to Helen, we will pass by the Hardman Farm State Historical Site which includes an 1870 Italianate mansion and a gazebo-topped Native American burial mound. Lastly, the Nora Mill Granary comes into view. It is an operational gristmill built in 1876 and sits alongside the Chattahoochee River.
We feel that these historical elements of Helen make for a grand and fitting conclusion the tour.
